Blocking and Tackling
Every NFL team spends time on blocking and tackling. Think about that for a moment.
These are the best football players in the world. They've been blocking and tackling since they were kids. Yet every training camp and every week during the season, coaches go back to the fundamentals. Why? Because championships are built on execution, not gimmicks. Radio isn't any different.
Over the years, I've been praised for constantly talking about the basics of programming. I've also been criticized for it. Some people think I spend too much time on fundamentals and not enough on the latest trend or technology. I couldn't disagree more. Research, AI, PPM, streaming, social media...they're all valuable tools. But they're just that, tools. They don't replace good programming. They don't replace sound judgment. And they certainly don't replace the fundamentals.
The stations that consistently win almost always have one thing in common: they execute the basics better than everyone else. One example is how we transition from music to content. Since the advent of PPM, many programmers have adopted the philosophy that the instant a song ends, the personality should immediately begin talking. No greeting. No station identification. No setup. Just launch into the content. I understand the reasoning. Every second matters. But sometimes I think we've taken the idea too far.
When I hear a voice suddenly appear out of nowhere, it often sounds unnatural. Almost jarring. Radio should have rhythm. It should have flow. A quick, natural "Good morning..." or a simple station identifier isn't wasted time if it sounds authentic. It tells listeners who they're with. It creates a smoother transition. It simply sounds like good radio. That's what I mean by the basics.
The basics are having a clear position in the market. Coaching talent. Playing the right music. Creating imaging that reinforces your brand. Running promotions listeners actually understand. Sounding consistent every hour of every day. None of those things are flashy. None of them are new.
But they're the reason some stations win year after year while others keep searching for the next magic bullet. The game changes. The technology changes. The way we measure audiences changes. But just like football, success still comes down to blocking and tackling. The best coaches never stop teaching the fundamentals.
Neither should we.
Who You Hire Matters
The best consultants don't simply point out problems. They become trusted partners who help make better programming decisions every day. That's the kind of relationship I work to build with every client. Over time, many tell me I've become an extension of their programming team, someone they can call for an honest opinion, a second set of ears, or help working through a tough decision. When you hire Gary, you get Gary. No associates. No hand-offs. Just an experienced programming partner committed to helping you build a better radio station.
